Wellness Pet Care: Preventing and Mitigating Common Health Issues
If you see veterinary care as a treat-the-symptom kind of service, you’re not seeing the full pet care picture. Lincoln Square Veterinary Hospital can help.
Pet wellness is what happens when we aren’t diagnosing illness or treating conditions. Pet wellness is a constant.
We take the following approach to pet wellness:
Nutrition
Our onsite pharmacy sells more than just meds. Prescription and other specialty diet foods and treats are available, too.
From healthy treats to specially formulated dry food that strengthen your senior pet’s joints, we provide what your pet needs. Our staff are also happy to discuss the benefits of particular products, so you go home informed.
Vaccinations
Puppies and kittens brought to us are put on a regimen to prevent the diseases common to their species.
Puppies and Kittens
For Puppies:
- DHAPP (distemper, adenovirus, hepatitis, parvo and parainfluenza): 8, 12, and 16 weeks
- Rabies: 16 to 24 weeks
We recommend bordetella and influenza vaccines if a pet is being boarded at a kennel or goes to the groomer. Leptospirosis and Lyme vaccines are based on risk factors. Our veterinarians will be happy to discuss the appropriate vaccination protocol for your pet based on his/her lifestyle.
For Kittens:
- FVRCP (Feline viral rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, panleukopenia): 8, 12, and 16 weeks
- Rabies: 16 to 24 weeks
- FeLV/FIV (feline leukemia/feline immunodeficiency): 12 weeks
Spay/Neuter
Most folks think that spaying or neutering is to prevent babies and aggression, but spaying or neutering your pet does a lot more for your pet’s quality of life than it does for yours.
Years of study reveal that incidence of breast cancer, urinary infections, and prostate issues decrease significantly in spayed and neutered pets. And, because pets that are fixed tend to roam less, the inevitable injuries that happen when venturing out are kept at a minimum.
Flea and Tick Products
No one wants to watch their pet struggle and scratch, and no one wants to find fleas or ticks in furniture or carpeting. More importantly though, today’s flea and tick products do double-duty, fighting off serious disease like heartworm and Lyme disease.
